A
Potted History
In the far North West of the county of Derbyshire, Buxton nestles in a
valley on the edge of the Pennines.
Records show Buxton's history goes back many centuries. The Romans were
well aware of the health giving properties of the natural springs, naming
the town Aquae Arnemetiae. However, it was during the Victorian period
that it became popular as a Spa town, and it was during this time that
many of the town's most famous buildings were constructed.
Apart from the everyday activities of the town, the Buxton of today caters
for many visitors, from those who come for the walks and the beautiful
scenery of the Peak district, to those who visit the many cultural and
entertainment functions of the Oprea House and Pavillion Gardens.
Market days are Tuesday and Saturday. Wednesday is called half-day closing
although very few shops follow this tradition.
